We live in an age of unprecedented economic globalization. Leading companies in every industry, from auto manufacturers to investment banks, operate worldwide. To remain competitive, corporations must function effectively not only in their home country, but in dozens of distinct foreign markets.
In this increasingly globalized business environment, international work experience is more valuable than ever. In order to compete in a foreign market, a company must employ individuals that speak the language and understand the culture of that nation. Companies must recruit staff that possess not only technical expertise and business savvy, but the ability to instill confidence and trust in boardrooms, factories and shops in foreign countries. Given this reality, employers in the 21st century search not just for job applicants with a college diploma, but for individuals who have demonstrated the ability to develop productive, professional relationships in an international business setting.
The growth of international business has made intercultural understanding a practical necessity.
"We have become not a melting pot but a great mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams." President Jimmy Carter
